Goal
Online Collaboration Lesson Description: Students will review the previous lesson and continue to learn the effects of illegal immigration in the United States. Working in groups, they will each have a different scenario to research on the internet and decide what the best proposal would be to solve the problem presented to them.

Standard:
New York State LOTE Standard 2: Students will develop cross-cultural skills and understandings.

Skills:
Learning problem solving skills, technology skills, how to be self directed, to work in groups and collaborate with others and that there may be more than one solution to the problem.

Action

Students will need access to the media center for the research and blogging during tthe lesson.
Students with limited technology skills will be allowed time on the computers in the classroom to gather information for their group.

With the previous lesson's information on the ramifications of immigration:
Students will be grouped having one member from the previous groups. This will bring together students with different outcomes of the previous lesson.
Students will then discuss the specific scenario given to them. Some examples are:
  • How should the U.S goverment handle illegal immigrant families living in the United States?
  • How should the U.S goverment handle the high school and college aged children of illegal immigrants that have grown up their entire lives in the United States?
  • How should the U.S goverment handle illegal immigrants that have lived and worked in the United States for many years?
Students will be provided with online resources to support their research on their specific issue.
Students will record and discuss important information that they discover versus their personal ideas and views on the topic.
Students will brainstorm to create a fair, moral and ethical solution to the problems.
Students will continue to present their findings and solutions to the Blog created in the previous lesson and respond to other groups discussions.

Monitor

Assessment:
Students will be assessed by daily checks for progress and their Blog entries. I will monitor students and be available for guidance during their discussions and research steps.


Evaluation
Lesson Reflection: The use of technology such as the internet and social networking strongly promotes communication among students themselves and their teachers. The focus of this lesson is developing an understanding of culture.
